A Letter to the President

Dear Mr. President,

I am writing to express my concerns regarding the current trajectory of American energy policy and the heavy emphasis on fossil fuel expansion. While the pursuit of energy independence is a vital national interest, the continued deep investment in oil—and the geopolitical conflicts often required to secure its flow—appears to be a strategy with a rapidly approaching expiration date.

The logic of aggressive oil investment rests on the idea of long-term stability, yet the data suggests otherwise. Current geological and consumption studies indicate that global oil reserves will be significantly depleted or in a state of terminal decline by the 2070s. If oil were truly a sustainable "collective endeavor" for the future of the human race, our strategies would be focused on preservation and transition rather than rapid extraction and the defense of dwindling supplies through military posturing.

Waging war or maintaining costly military presences to protect oil interests is, at its core, a waste of American time, capital, and lives for a resource that is finite. By the time today’s youngest Americans reach retirement, the era of oil will be effectively over.

True leadership involves looking beyond the next few years and preparing the nation for the inevitable reality of 2070. We should be pivoting our vast industrial and intellectual resources toward energy solutions that do not require us to be perpetually on a war footing. I urge you to reconsider the long-term cost of oil dependency and to lead a shift toward a future that doesn't run dry.

Respectfully,

Josh Willger
